More and more baby boomers are quickly beginning to prepare for retirement. Some chose to move to traditional assisted living facilities and senior homes, while others may choose to move in with family members.

There are also select groups that choose to stay in their homes for as long as possible. These individuals may need to incorporate some changes into their home to make sure it is a safe and comfortable living environment for a senior citizen. There is a new trend being seen in the remodeling and interior design community referred to as “aging in place.” This new type of design tackles these issues head on and represents a move toward a more holistic building project that incorporates future-oriented planning through architecture and interior design.

If baby boomers are opting to stay in their current homes, there are a couple of ways they can make their houses more comfortable for years to come. Individuals can incorporate wider doorways and roll-in showers to accommodate seniors with walkers or wheelchairs.

There are numerous amounts of baby boomers retiring every single day who want to maintain their freedom and stay in their current homes. Contractors and builders across the country are working on incorporating “aging in place” into many new innovative plans for the boomer generation!

Reasonable Accommodation in the Workplace

Often times, Federal hiring officials find it necessary to make a reasonable workplace accommodation for a person with a disability if it is requested and appropriate. Practical accommodations can apply to the duties of the job, and/or where and how job tasks are performed. Accommodations should make it easier for the employee to successfully perform the duties of their job. 

A couple of examples of reasonable accommodations may include providing interpreters, readers, or other personal assistants, modifying job duties, restructuring work sites, providing flexible work schedules or work sites, and providing accessible technology or other workplace adaptive equipment. 

You can request reasonable accommodations either orally or in writing. People who need accommodations are responsible for making their needs known to their bosses or to whomever it may concern. The supervisors and the individuals should explain the individual’s needs, and identify the appropriate reasonable accommodation required to meet those needs.

In Rwanda, the president of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) is urging employers to refrain from turning people away due to their disabilities (allafrica.com).

There are many employment opportunities that have no relative mobile duties, and yet qualified applicants are being turned down in a country which has actively promoted the rights of people with physical challenges (allafrica.com). Equal access to education and public healthcare have been granted and appreciated, but a copious amount of companies are reluctant to employ people living with disabilities (allafrica.com).

NYC's St. Patrick's Day Parade Details

The New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade is one of our city’s greatest traditions.  The first parade was held on March 17, 1762 - fourteen years before the Declaration of Independence was adopted – and has marched its way to the largest parade in the world today!

The Parade starts at 44th Street at 11:00 am and is held every March 17th, except when March 17th falls on a Sunday, it is celebrated the day before, Saturday the 16th due to religious observances.

The parade marches up Fifth Avenue past St. Patrick's Cathedral at 50th Street all the way up past the American Irish Historical Society at 83rd and the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 83rd Street to 86th Street, where the parade finishes at around 4:30 - 5:00 pm.

Your best bet is to leave your cars at home and take an MTA train or bus to New York City to join the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Some of the best viewing spots are on the upper steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and 86th street, where the parade ends and the marchers disperse.  This is an especially great spot if you have children with you would like to meet some of the many police officers, firefighters, and other participants!

National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month- an entire month when Americans are asked to pay greater attention to both the needs and potential of people with developmental disabilities. 

“It is wonderful that Americans are asked to raise their awareness of the needs and accomplishments of people with disabilities during the month of March,” said Sid Blanchard, executive director of Community Access Unlimited. “Yet for our members, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is a month-long celebration of what they achieve 12 months a year,” (NJ.com).

In declaring March Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in 1987, President Reagan encouraged all Americans to offer their fellow citizens with disabilities both encouragement and opportunities to achieve their full potential (NJ.com).
